Symptoms of Psychosis and Schizophrenia
People who are coping with psychosis or schizophrenia may experience a range of symptoms including:
- Hearing voices that other people don’t hear
- Seeing things or people that others don’t see
- Maintaining a belief that others are reading their minds and controlling their thoughts
- Holding the belief that others are plotting to harm them
While many people with psychosis or schizophrenia can live meaningful lives in the community, others may be are dependent on help to manage and structure their lives and meet basic needs. Difficulties in holding a job and self-care may, at times, be common.
As with other mental illnesses, no one is to blame for an individual having this disorder. We are not certain exactly what causes this illness but it appears that it is biological in origin and that symptoms worsen under stress.
